Countdown to Somerset Day 2023

WITH just a week to go until Somerset Day 2023, there is still time to get involved and #flytheflagforkingandcounty.

The team behind Somerset Day are hoping that the county and subsequently social media, will be awash with a sea of flags in the lead up to and over the weekend following May 11. This year’s theme ties with the King’s Coronation.

In previous years the not-for-profit Community Interest Company has worked with patrons, partners and sponsors to ensure that the awareness day has trended across the world with more than 22 million social media users reached in 2022.

Somerset Day Patron Michael Eavis celebrated Somerset Day 2021by flying a Somerset flag at Worthy Farm.

“The first two weekends in May will be especially significant for Somerset this year as we see the King crowned in a ceremony little changed since that first held in Bath Abbey over1,000 years ago, and go on to celebrate Somerset Day just one week later,” saidNigel Muers-Raby, CEO and founder of Passion for Somerset CIC, the organisation behind Somerset Day.

“Although we will be celebrating Somerset Day on May 11, this year we’re delighted to be partnering with BBC Radio Somerset to host Somerset’s biggest ever quiz on Friday, May 12, between 7pm and 9pm.”

Anyone can join in and take part in the virtual quiz hosted live on BBC Radio Somerset, but the quiz is not going to be just limited to the radio – organisers are encouraging organisations and individuals to host a quiz to raise funds for a local Somerset cause and make the quiz the biggest ever.

All people need to do is choose a venue and tell everyone about it and the team behind Somerset Day will provide a pack with the rounds, questions and answers. They will even promote the event on the Somerset Day website.

In addition to running the quiz, Passion for Somerset CIC are supporting other events taking place to celebrate the County, including: the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards on Thursday, May 11, at the Conference Centre, Bridgwater & Taunton College, Taunton; Somerset FA Intermediate Cup Final at Shepton Mallet Football Club; eat:Taunton in the town centre on Saturday, May 13, and a special service of Choral Evensong at Wells Cathedral, also on Saturday, May 13, at 5.15pm.
