Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, Glastonbury’s Sacred Birth Centre is hosting a number of unique, free art and creativity workshops across Somerset that will provide support for people to share birth stories. The next workshop takes place on the morning of Friday, 24th April at the Portway Annexe in Wells.
This is part of a movement to bring birth stories into the light, to create healing, and to push for change in the maternity system.
1 in 3 women in the UK describe their birth experience as traumatic, and the Sacred Birth Centre’s Birth Stories Project invites people to safely share their experiences, regardless of when the birth took place or whether their story is positive, challenging or transformative. By collecting and sharing these stories, the centre aims to break the silence around birth trauma, build awareness and advocate for better, more compassionate maternity care.
In this workshop you will be able to share your birth story through art. The facilitators Sarah Slaughter (artist) and Samsara Tanner (professional facilitator and doula mentor) will facilitate the creative process in a safe and supported space.
Stories will be shared and expressed in a community space through your choice of painting, drawing or sewing. The art created by participants will be part of the Birth Stories exhibition, which will take place on 26th-27th September in Glastonbury.
The exhibition will include art from four different workshops, and also words and spoken words from online poetry sessions.
Booking is essential as spaces are limited. To book a place on the workshop, please go here.
