FOLLOWING their strong A-level results announced last week, Wells Cathedral School has announced another year of outstanding GCSE achievements.
Just under half the pupils secured the top grades 9-7, with 15 per cent attaining the top grade of 9, which is an increase on last years’ results, with nearly a third of pupils achieving grades 9-8.
More than 94 per cent of pupils secured a grade 4 or above (which is an increase on last year’s results). They have significantly outperformed the national average of 67.4 per cent in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Pupils have been celebrating their success across the whole range of subjects studied at Wells Cathedral School from the Sciences to Drama and Maths to Music. There were exceptional results in the individual science subjects. In Physics, 47 per cent of pupils earned a grade 9, with 50 per cent of Chemistry pupils getting a grade 9 and 47 per cent of Biology pupils gaining a grade 9. Computing pupils also excelled, with 77 per cent achieving grades 9-7.
Alastair Tighe, Head Master, said: “I’m thrilled to be celebrating with our pupils after they have achieved such an excellent set of GCSE results. As always, their success is testimony not only to pupils’ hard work and effort, but also to the skill and expertise of their teachers as well as the support of their parents and families.
“I’m delighted that pupils have achieved so highly across the full range of subjects we offer, and that they have all done so while still taking full advantage of our wider non-academic curriculum which is a core part of a Wells education.”
Several of the school’s specialist musicians took GCSE Music at the end of Year 9, two years earlier than most GCSE candidates, and 100 per cent of these young musicians achieved grades 9-7.
Deputy Head (Academic) Natalie Perry said: “We are absolutely delighted with this year’s GCSE results, which are a reflection of the academic success fostered throughout the school.
“Our pupils have not only performed significantly above national averages across a diverse range of subjects, but their outstanding achievements are a direct reflection of the dedicated and nurturing support provided by our incredible teaching staff. This whole-school commitment to excellence empowers every pupil to reach their full potential, and we couldn’t be prouder of these fantastic outcomes.”
