MP for Wells and Mendip Hills, Tessa Munt, is demanding that Andy Burnham make the radical overhaul of the water industry one of his first acts as Prime Minister.
It follows new analysis of data revealing the scale of environmental damage in Wells and Mendip Hills, where sewage was spilled into local waterways for 11,704 hours last year across 1,081 separate incidents.
The Lib Dems are calling on the new administration to abandon the privatisation model and return water infrastructure to the public through a customer-owned mutual model.
Tessa Munt MP said: “Disgracefully, for years our local waterways have been pumped full of sewage, all while water bills have risen and water companies have reported profits.
“My colleagues and I are calling on our new Prime Minister to stand up for our communities and hand our water infrastructure back to the people who actually use and rely on it.”
